How to Pre-Plan Cremation in Palmetto, FL (And Why It Matters)

Pre-planning is one of the most thoughtful decisions you can make for your family. It locks in today’s prices, documents your wishes, and removes a significant burden from the people you love most.

Most people do not enjoy thinking about their own death or that of someone they love. That is entirely understandable — and it is also exactly why pre-planning is so valuable. The families who struggle most during the arrangement process are those who are making decisions for the first time, under emotional pressure, with no prior guidance from the person who passed. The families who experience the most peace are those where the decisions were already made.

Pre-planning a cremation arrangement at AM Cremation & Funeral Care is not a morbid act. It is a practical one — and one of the most generous things you can do for the people who will eventually need to act on your behalf. For a complete overview of the cremation process, see our Complete Florida Cremation Guide.

1. Why Pre-Planning Matters

01

Your wishes are documented and followed

A pre-arrangement puts your specific preferences in writing — type of cremation, disposition of remains, service wishes, merchandise selections. There is no guessing, no disagreement among family members, no uncertainty about what you would have wanted.

02

You protect your family from a difficult burden

Making funeral arrangements while grieving is one of the hardest things a family does. Pre-planning removes that burden entirely. Your family can focus on supporting each other rather than making unfamiliar decisions under time pressure.

03

You lock in today’s service prices

Funeral and cremation costs have increased consistently over time. Pre-paying at current prices protects against future increases on the service items covered by your contract — a meaningful financial benefit for families planning ahead.

04

You prevent family disagreements

Without a documented pre-arrangement, well-meaning family members may have different ideas about what their loved one would have wanted. A pre-arrangement eliminates that uncertainty and the conflict it can create during an already difficult time.

05

It can affect Medicaid eligibility

In some circumstances, a pre-paid funeral arrangement is treated as an exempt asset for Medicaid qualification purposes. Families exploring long-term care planning should consult with an elder law attorney about how pre-need arrangements may factor into their specific situation.

06

Everything is in place when it is needed most

When a death occurs, the family already has the arrangement in place. Information is on file, wishes are documented, funding is secured. The process moves more smoothly and with far less stress for everyone involved.

2. Who Can Pre-Plan

You do not have to pre-plan only for yourself. At AM Cremation & Funeral Care, pre-need arrangements can be made by:

  • Individuals planning for themselves — the most common scenario. You document your own wishes, select your package and any merchandise, and fund the arrangement at your own pace or in full.
  • Adult children planning for an aging parent — a thoughtful act of care for a parent who may not be in a position to manage the process themselves, or who simply has not gotten around to it.
  • Spouses planning for each other — many couples pre-arrange together, ensuring both are covered and each knows the other’s wishes are in place.
  • Anyone planning for another person — as long as the person being pre-arranged for is identified and the arrangement is funded appropriately, a pre-need contract can be established by a family member or other responsible party.

There is no age requirement to pre-plan. Younger adults who want to ensure their wishes are documented and take advantage of current pricing can do so. Pre-planning is not only for seniors.

3. What a Pre-Need Contract Covers — and What It Does Not

Understanding exactly what is and is not locked in by a pre-need contract is important. Not everything in a cremation arrangement is treated the same way.

Price-guaranteed service items

  • Professional services of funeral director and staff
  • Transfer of remains from place of death
  • Refrigeration and care at our facility
  • All required documentation and filing
  • Cremation fee
  • Coordination services (veteran scheduling, honors, etc.)
  • Obituary posting on our website

Cash advance & third-party items

  • Certified death certificates (county fee)
  • County Medical Examiner fee
  • Urns and keepsake merchandise
  • Obituary publication in newspapers
  • Cemetery or columbarium fees
  • Flowers and stationery
  • Shipping of cremated remains

Service items — the professional work performed by our staff — are fully price-guaranteed. The price you pay today for those items is the price that applies when the arrangement is carried out, regardless of how many years pass or how prices change.

Cash advance and third-party items are different. These are costs paid to outside parties — county offices, cemeteries, newspapers, merchandise suppliers — over which we have no pricing control. For these items, families can set aside funds at current estimated rates as part of their pre-need funding. If those third-party costs have increased by the time of need, the family pays the difference. If costs are lower, the difference is returned. We are transparent about which category each item falls into so there are no surprises.

4. The Price Guarantee Explained

Florida’s pre-need funeral laws govern how pre-need contracts must be structured and funded, providing significant consumer protections. Our price guarantee works as follows:

  • Service items are locked at today’s price. The professional service fees in your contract are fixed at the time you sign. If our prices increase in future years, those increases do not apply to your pre-arrangement — you paid today’s price.
  • Merchandise pricing reflects current estimates. Urns, keepsake items, and other merchandise sourced from third-party suppliers are priced at current market rates in your contract. If supplier pricing changes before the arrangement is carried out, there may be a difference. We work to minimize this and are upfront about the distinction.
  • Cash advance items are estimated, not guaranteed. County fees, cemetery charges, and similar third-party costs are listed at current rates. Any increase at the time of need is the responsibility of the family; any decrease results in a refund.
The practical result: The largest and most significant costs — the professional service fees that make up the core of your arrangement — are fully protected against future price increases. This is where the real financial benefit of pre-planning lies.

5. How Pre-Need Is Funded in Florida

Florida law requires that pre-need funds be handled in a specific, consumer-protective way. At AM Cremation & Funeral Care, pre-need arrangements are funded through Funeral Services Inc. (FSI), a state-certified pre-need funeral trust company. Here is how it works:

State-certified trust

Funds paid toward your pre-need arrangement are placed into a trust account managed by FSI and regulated by the Florida Department of Financial Services. The money is held separately from our operating funds — it belongs to you, not to us, until the arrangement is carried out. This means your funds are protected even if our business circumstances were ever to change.

Payment options

Pre-need arrangements can be funded in a single lump-sum payment or through a payment plan. Our pre-need counselors will work with you to find an approach that fits your situation. A pre-need processing fee of $125 applies to all pre-arrangement contracts.

Transferability

If you move out of our service area, Florida law allows pre-need contracts to be transferred to another licensed funeral home. The funds in trust follow the contract. We will assist with any transfer if needed.

What we do not offer

We do not sell funeral insurance as a pre-need funding vehicle. Our pre-need arrangements are funded exclusively through the FSI state-certified trust. If you have been approached by a funeral insurance salesperson, please contact us to understand the differences before making a decision.

6. Travel Assurance — If Death Occurs Away From Home

Many families in our area are active travelers or split time between Florida and other states. A standard pre-need arrangement with a local funeral home covers what happens when death occurs within our service area. But what happens if a covered person passes away more than 75 miles from their legal residence?

We offer a separate Travel Assurance plan that addresses exactly this situation. If the covered individual passes away more than 75 miles from their legal residence — whether domestically or internationally — the Travel Assurance plan covers the costs associated with returning the deceased to our care in Palmetto so that the pre-arranged cremation can proceed as planned.

Travel Assurance is purchased separately from your pre-need arrangement and is not included in standard package pricing. It is particularly worth considering for:

  • Families who travel frequently or seasonally
  • Snowbirds who spend significant time in other states
  • Those who travel internationally
  • Anyone with family in other parts of the country who visits regularly

Ask our pre-need counselors about adding Travel Assurance when you discuss your pre-arrangement. It provides meaningful peace of mind that your pre-planned wishes can be carried out regardless of where death occurs.

7. How to Start Your Pre-Arrangement

1

Begin the conversation

Call us at (941) 212-1093, visit our Plan Ahead page, or stop by our Palmetto office. There is no pressure and no obligation. Our first conversation is simply about understanding what you are looking for and answering any questions you have.

2

Choose your package and preferences

We walk you through our cremation packages and any additional selections — urn preferences, service wishes, disposition of remains, veteran benefits coordination if applicable. Everything is documented in your pre-arrangement file. You can review our full General Price List in advance or we can walk through it together.

3

Review what is and is not price-guaranteed

We clearly identify which items in your arrangement are fully price-guaranteed service items and which are cash advance or third-party items. No surprises, no ambiguity.

4

Fund your arrangement

We establish your pre-need contract and your funds are placed into the FSI state-certified trust. Payment can be made in full or structured as a payment plan. The $125 pre-need processing fee applies at this stage.

5

Tell someone where to find it

The most important final step: make sure the right family member or trusted person knows that a pre-arrangement exists and how to find the documentation. We recommend keeping a copy of the contract with your important documents and telling at least one family member. If no one knows it exists, it cannot be acted upon.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I change my mind after pre-planning?
Florida law gives pre-need purchasers the right to cancel a pre-need contract and receive a refund of the funds held in trust, subject to the terms of the contract and applicable state regulations. If you want to modify your arrangement rather than cancel it — changing your package selection, adding items, or updating your preferences — that can generally be done by contacting us directly. We recommend reviewing your pre-arrangement periodically to ensure it still reflects your wishes.
What if AM Cremation & Funeral Care is no longer in business when I pass?
This is one of the most important reasons Florida law requires pre-need funds to be held in a state-certified trust rather than commingled with a funeral home’s operating funds. Your funds are held by Funeral Services Inc. (FSI) and are protected regardless of our business circumstances. If we were ever unable to fulfill a pre-need contract, Florida’s pre-need laws provide for the transfer of funds and the obligation to another licensed provider.
Can I pre-plan if I already have a prepaid plan elsewhere?
If you have a pre-need contract with another funeral home, you may be able to transfer it to AM Cremation & Funeral Care. Florida law allows pre-need contracts to be transferred between licensed providers. Contact us to discuss the specifics of your existing contract and we can advise on whether and how a transfer would work in your situation.
Does pre-planning affect my life insurance or estate?
Pre-need arrangements are generally structured so that the funds are designated for funeral expenses and are not considered part of the estate for probate purposes. In some circumstances they may also be considered an exempt asset for Medicaid eligibility. Every family’s situation is different — we recommend consulting with an elder law attorney or estate planning professional to understand how a pre-need arrangement interacts with your specific financial and estate planning picture.
How much does it cost to pre-plan?
The cost of your pre-arrangement is the current price of the package and any additional items you select, plus a $125 pre-need processing fee. Because service prices are locked at today’s rates, the total you pay now is the total for those items regardless of future price changes. You can review our current pricing at amcremations.com/pricing before your appointment or we can walk through everything together with no obligation.
What documents should I gather before pre-planning?
Having the following information available will make the arrangement process smoother: full legal name, date and place of birth, Social Security number, current address, highest level of education, parents’ names (including mother’s maiden name), military service information and DD-214 if applicable, and the name and contact information of the person who will be responsible for carrying out the arrangement. You do not need everything in hand to start the conversation — we can gather information over multiple contacts.
