If you’re searching for the cost of cremation in Florida, you’ve probably already noticed that prices are hard to pin down. Some providers advertise a number that looks low, then add fees for removal, the Medical Examiner, refrigeration, and death certificates that more than double the total. Others don’t publish prices at all.

At AM Cremation & Funeral Care in Palmetto, we publish every number publicly — because families making these decisions during one of the hardest moments of their lives deserve transparency. This guide gives you the same honest breakdown our licensed funeral directors walk families through every day, whether you choose us or not. For a broader look at how cremation works, Florida law, and what to do with cremated remains, see our Complete Cremation Guide. For a county-specific breakdown focused on Manatee County, see our Cremation Costs in Manatee County guide.

1. Quick Answer: Cremation Costs in Florida

Here is a realistic statewide picture for 2026:

Service Type Typical Florida Range What Drives the Difference
Direct / Simple Cremation $945 – $2,000 Package inclusions, whether the provider owns their crematory, prompt-pay discounts
Cremation + private viewing $1,495 – $2,500 Facility use fee, preparation of remains
Cremation + memorial service $1,800 – $4,000 Facility/staff fees, urn selection, death certificate quantity
Cremation + full funeral service $3,000 – $7,000+ Embalming, casket or rental casket, visitation fees
Traditional burial (for comparison) $8,000 – $15,000+ Casket, burial vault, cemetery plot, opening/closing fees
Our Simple Cremation Package starts at $945 (prompt pay, within 50 miles) — one of the most affordable dignified cremation options on Florida’s west coast. For most families in our service area, the discounted package removal fee of $250 and the county Medical Examiner fee ($35 in Manatee and Sarasota counties) are the only additions, bringing the typical total to around $1,230.

2. What Is (and Isn’t) Included in a Cremation Price

The most common source of frustration families encounter when comparing cremation providers in Florida is discovering that the advertised price doesn’t include everything. Understanding what should — and shouldn’t — be in a base price helps you compare providers accurately.

What should always be included

A legitimate direct cremation price should cover: transportation of the deceased from the place of death, refrigeration and care at the funeral home or crematory, all required documentation (death certificate filing, disposition permit), the actual cremation fee, an alternative container, and return of the cremated remains in a basic urn or container.

What is almost always additional

  • Removal fee — the charge for transporting the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home. Our standard itemized removal fee is $450; a discounted rate of $250 within a 50-mile radius applies when selected with one of our cremation packages. Additional charges may apply for locations outside our standard service area or situations requiring additional personnel or specialized equipment. We discuss any applicable additional fees openly before proceeding.
  • Medical Examiner fee — Florida law requires Medical Examiner review and approval before every cremation. This fee is set by the county, not the funeral home, and is passed through at cost. It ranges from $0 (Charlotte County) to $70 (Lee County). See the full breakdown in Section 5.
  • Additional death certificates — you will need certified copies for banks, insurance companies, the VA, retirement accounts, and the estate. Each copy is $12 through our office.
  • Upgraded urns — basic packages include a simple polymer urn. Families who want a premium wooden, brass, or ceramic urn will pay additional, typically $75–$500.
  • Obituary placement — posting an obituary to a newspaper is separate from the funeral home’s obituary composition fee. Newspapers set their own rates. Our obituary composition service is $150; our Simple Package includes a free listing on our website only.
The FTC Funeral Rule requires every licensed funeral home in Florida to provide a General Price List to any person who asks. Reputable providers publish it online. AM Cremation & Funeral Care’s full, itemized General Price List is available on our website at all times. For a full guide to reading and comparing price lists, see our post: How to Read a Funeral Home General Price List.

5. Medical Examiner Fees by County

Florida law requires Medical Examiner review and approval before any cremation can occur. Importantly, the ME reviews the certified cause of death — which means the physician must complete their portion of the death certificate first before the ME review can begin. This fee is set by each county and passed through to families at cost. It is not a funeral home markup.

Manatee

Sarasota
$35.00
Pinellas
$40.00
DeSoto
$35.00
Charlotte
$0.00
Hillsborough

Fees in counties not listed above vary. If your loved one passed away outside our standard service area, please call us and we’ll confirm the applicable Medical Examiner fee as part of your cost estimate.

6. Fees to Watch Out for at Other Florida Providers

Not every cremation provider in Florida operates with full pricing transparency. When comparing providers, here are the fees most commonly obscured or added late in the arrangement process.

Third-party crematory fees
Some Florida funeral homes that advertise cremation do not own their own crematory. They contract the cremation out to a third party and may pass that fee through without disclosing it clearly. AM Cremation & Funeral Care owns and operates our own crematory in Palmetto — your loved one stays in our care from the first call to the return of cremated remains, with no third-party handling.
Basic services fee added on top of the direct cremation price
Florida funeral homes are required to charge a “basic services of funeral director and staff” fee covering overhead and coordination. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, this fee must be included in the price of direct cremation — it cannot be added on top as a separate charge. Some providers list it separately to make their base price look lower. Our basic services fee of $1,975 is incorporated into our package prices, not tacked on separately. Our package pricing reflects a significant discount from the full itemized basic services fee.
Removal fee not disclosed upfront
The removal fee is one of the most commonly buried costs in cremation pricing. Providers who advertise a very low direct cremation price often quote it without the removal fee, then add it later. Our standard itemized removal fee is $450; our discounted package rate of $250 applies within 50 miles when selected with a cremation package. We disclose both clearly — always ask any provider for the total including removal before comparing.
Refrigeration and storage fees starting immediately
If cremation is delayed — while waiting for next-of-kin authorization, a physician to complete the death certificate, or family requests — some providers charge daily storage fees right away. Our packages include 14 days of refrigeration at no additional charge. Extended storage beyond 14 days (in cases of delayed authorization only) is $30 per day.
Insurance handling fees
If you plan to use a life insurance policy to pay for cremation, ask any provider upfront what they charge to process an insurance assignment. Our fee is $450, which reflects the administrative work of coordinating directly with insurers. Some providers charge more and do not disclose this until the arrangement conference.
Vague “rush” or “expedited” cremation claims
Our Expedited Simple Cremation Package ($1,245) places your family at the front of the line immediately — we move everything within our control as fast as legally possible. What no provider can control is the physician’s completion of the death certificate. The statute allows up to 72 hours, but in practice that window is not always met — some physicians take considerably longer regardless of the legal requirement. The ME’s sequential review adds additional time outside our control, as does Florida’s mandatory 48-hour holding period from time of death. Ask any provider offering “rush” cremation to be specific about what they are actually guaranteeing.

7. Ways to Reduce Cremation Costs in Florida

Pay promptly

Our Simple Cremation Package is priced at $945 with prompt pay (cash, personal check, or credit/debit card on the day of arrangement). Prompt payment is the single easiest way to access our lowest pricing.

Choose the right number of death certificates

Every certified death certificate copy costs $12. For most estates with a home, bank accounts, retirement accounts, and a surviving spouse, 6–8 certified copies is usually sufficient. Our Premium Package includes 6 at no extra charge — a meaningful savings for families who need multiple copies.

Pre-plan at today’s prices

Cremation costs increase over time. Families who pre-plan and pre-pay lock in today’s pricing on service items against future increases. Our Plan Ahead page explains how pre-need arrangements work in Florida, including how funds are protected in a state-certified trust. A pre-need processing fee of $125 applies, but the long-term savings — and peace of mind — often make it worthwhile. For a full guide, see our post: How to Pre-Plan Cremation in Palmetto, FL.

Use veteran benefits

If the deceased was a U.S. military veteran, significant savings are available. The VA covers the gravesite, opening and closing fees, a government headstone or marker, and a burial flag at national cemeteries — all at no cost to the family. Our Veterans’ Benefits page outlines all available benefits. For a full breakdown of every benefit, see our post: Veteran Cremation Benefits in Florida.

Consider body donation

Whole-body donation to a Florida medical or research institution is another path some families choose. In many cases, the receiving institution returns cremated remains to the family at no cost after the donation period. We assist with body donation coordination as part of our services.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the cost of cremation in Florida vary so much from provider to provider?
The primary drivers are: whether the funeral home owns its own crematory (those that don’t pay a third party and may pass that cost through), what is included in the base price versus itemized as add-ons, and whether the provider offers prompt-pay discounts. Always ask any provider for their full General Price List — Florida funeral homes are legally required to give it to you upon request.
Does cremation cost more in some Florida counties than others?
Package prices at AM Cremation & Funeral Care are the same regardless of county. The only county-specific variable is the Medical Examiner fee (see Section 5) and, in some cases, the removal fee if the place of death is farther from our facility in Palmetto or requires additional personnel or equipment.
Can I pay for cremation with a credit card?
Yes. We accept cash, personal checks, and credit or debit cards. All payment methods qualify for our prompt-pay pricing as long as payment is made in full on the day arrangements are made.
What if I cannot afford cremation right now?
We accept life insurance assignment as a form of payment (a $450 processing fee applies). We can also file against the estate for payment (a $495 estate filing fee applies). If you are in a situation of genuine financial hardship, please call us — we have helped many families find workable solutions and can discuss all available options with you privately.
Does the quoted price include the urn?
Yes, all of our packages include an urn. The Simple Cremation Package includes a basic polymer urn. Our Premium packages include a premium wooden laminate, brushed bronze snap-lock, or brass alloy urn valued up to $195. Upgraded urns, keepsake urns, and jewelry are available as add-ons at additional cost.
How long does the cremation process take in Florida?
Our standard timeline is 10–12 business days from the time of death, accounting for Florida’s mandatory 48-hour holding period, physician certification of cause of death, Medical Examiner approval, next-of-kin authorizations, and the state disposition permit. The physician’s completion of the death certificate is typically the longest step — the statute allows up to 72 hours, but in practice that window is not always met and some physicians take considerably longer. The ME review follows sequentially and cannot begin until the physician has completed their portion. For families who need us to move as fast as legally possible, our Expedited Simple Cremation Package ($1,245) places your family at the front of the line immediately on our end — though the physician’s timeline and ME review remain outside any provider’s control.
Is the cost of cremation in Florida tax-deductible?
In some circumstances, funeral and cremation expenses may be deductible from the deceased’s estate for federal estate tax purposes. They are generally not deductible on a personal income tax return. We recommend consulting with an estate attorney or CPA for guidance specific to your situation.
